SHOWCASE

Throughout this SHOWCASE you will learn about my journey through the Master of Arts in Education Technology (MAET) program, at Michigan State University, and how I have applied this knowledge to my classroom.

I used collaboration as a form of research and learned how to better
integrate technology as a tool for learning.

When I synthesize about my learning in this master's program, much of what I learned is directly applied to my teaching. I have organized my showcase around the themes of collaboration, integration, and research.

COLLABORATION

STEAM Lab 2017

I have been working diligently to share technology resources with my staff. The big question I ask myself is "How can I get people to try a new tool?" I have invited teachers to my classroom, and showcased student work to help teachers see the impact tech-tools can have on students creativity. During the summer of 2017 I co-hosted a session about infographics at a professional development STEAMLab event. From this collaborative experience, I learned how to better teach-teachers, which will support me in my role as the technology resource teacher for my school.

Maker Faire 2016

At my school district we have been trying to push the Maker Movement beyond the classroom. During the summer of 2016 I was part of a Maker Faire held at Michigan State University. The bulk of this experience was spent working together to organize the location, create a brand, advertise, and develop a flow to the actual event. These were just some of the time consuming (but extremely necessary) conversations that occurred before hosting the Maker Faire. As a result, I have been able to help plan family Maker Faire nights at my school district.

Understanding Understanding

I have always been interested in film and its impact on the viewer, specifically how educators are portrayed. Through a collaborative study we researched a common (or mysterious) structure of knowledge that seems to interfere with teaching. We conducted interviews and documented our learning in the form of a video and website. Ultimately, we learned that it is up to individuals to decide where their experiences fit into their beliefs about education, not the portrayal within film.

Wicked Problem

As teachers we strive to push our students thinking, but are we modeling complex thinking? Surely it seems like a simple idea, but on the contrary it is not. This infographic and blog post explains the wickedness of Teaching Complex Thinking. Through the use of surveys and extensive research, we learned the "wickedness" is the implementation, and lack of knowledge about teaching complex thinking skills.

INTEGRATING TECHNOLOGY

DreamIT Grant Proposal

I wrote a grant to transform part of my technology class to allow to students to go on a journey of project-based activities using LEGO® Education WeDo 2.0. With this tool, students’ skills will be enhanced across science, engineering, technology, and coding. The focus of my DreamIT website was to present a grant proposal that explains how I would intelligently integrate new technologies to help student understanding in a transformational way.

Hosting a Webinar

As educators, how can we effectively use technology in the classroom to assist student learning? After hosting a webinar with a collection of teachers and technology experts, I better understand what using technology effectively might look like in my own classroom. From this experience, I learned how to use GoogleHangouts as a mode of collaboration which I intend to use to teach-teachers and students.

21st Century Lesson Plan

I developed a lesson plan to offer my students an innovative assessment for an experience based learning activity. This experience allowed me to understand the Technological, Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK) approach as a transformative tool for assessment. With this knowledge, I am better able to consider the integration of technology as a form of creative assessment.

Networked Learning Project

This is by far the most memorable project I have ever completed because I was challenged to learn something that I have always wanted to learn to do. The trick was, I was only allowed to rely on technology to learn. From this project I realized the importance of questioning and self-exploration as a form of integrating technology. When students have a question they want explore, I know I can use the idea of productive struggle to help them learn to problem solve independently.
